Wayne Smith is a San Francisco-based visual and sound artist who has worked in a variety of media including drawing, collage, installation, and scanner-based imagery.

Repetitive drawing has been a recurring practice in his visual art. In his most recent work, small grids of ink on pieces of found wood approach drawing as a plotting activity. The grain of the wood determines that irregularities often occur; the ruled ballpoint pen ink applied to this uneven surface becomes a timeline of sorts. The markings often appear to merge with the wood, giving the works a vibratory, moire-like visual quality.

His work is included in the collections of BAMPFA and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has been an Affiliate Artist at Headland Center at Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA, and a resident at Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, CA. He has a BA in Painting and an MA in Sculpture from San Jose State University, CA.
