Smith’s sound work parallels his visual work in its use of repetition, overlapping fields, and exploitation of accidents. Having made field recordings for many years, he began assembling these recordings into compositions in the late 1990s. Combined with elements of live improvisation and digital manipulation, they comprised the tracks for the first release of his music/sound project Aero-Mic’d in 2001.
Smith scored the soundtrack for D-L Alvarez and Kevin Killian’s The Visitor Owl, which was screened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2012. Live performances by Aero-Mic’d, including Cliff Hengst and Scott Hewicker, have taken place at the Meridian Gallery and Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, and The Schindler House, Los Angeles.
